It's been a while since I've updated this, but don't worry: a lack of blogs doesn't mean a lack of adventures! This was the first Thanksgiving that many of my friends and I have ever spent away from home, so to do something special, we treated ourselves to American food at the Hard Rock Cafe after our classes (strange to have class on Thanksgiving). The sign below was next to the door. A good rule for an establishment, I feel.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihfSPLirgXD_9YhijTVFkM-dYN8A_abRnJLu-XT1qFngByP8l9SdcwuHak7NihkGlaBOxoV12dNMVEeE0md2MicA5bLY_MIldAIILiwgAjq2WwQmfC9RzFYyShQYhhiyqcMvlTxCmWhV4/s1600-h/IMG_2559.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihfSPLirgXD_9YhijTVFkM-dYN8A_abRnJLu-XT1qFngByP8l9SdcwuHak7NihkGlaBOxoV12dNMVEeE0md2MicA5bLY_MIldAIILiwgAjq2WwQmfC9RzFYyShQYhhiyqcMvlTxCmWhV4/s320/IMG_2559.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280693448220461154" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Every year, Norway gives England a tree as a symbol of its gratitude for their help in WWII. Craig, Kristen, and I thought it would be fun to attend the Lighting-Up Ceremony in Trafalgar Square, where the Lord Mayor of London and the Mayor of Oslo were going to speak. Accompanied by carols, it was a fun experience, especially since it's been taking place every year for the last 60 years.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGEAdrxL8K3-hgo5yw5bO-7JecmVd17PZ5M0aHRNxi3i9j6vXmksJljWYsJN21KBQGjchXfEC_g7It5osF_tLECGCzDhClpwnj2qg8yXpVw9-G8oqqZ63gdKF2LrFn06xasMhBMm5ia-g/s1600-h/IMG_2610.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGEAdrxL8K3-hgo5yw5bO-7JecmVd17PZ5M0aHRNxi3i9j6vXmksJljWYsJN21KBQGjchXfEC_g7It5osF_tLECGCzDhClpwnj2qg8yXpVw9-G8oqqZ63gdKF2LrFn06xasMhBMm5ia-g/s320/IMG_2610.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280693472267434482" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx2S6YHCAQdGtMG3jFODZTmYnRjeqUdI5_n89Ge-QZX5hHICVXyx99ce4xQzL1GTBRO0vbULe_i7IvSA0bvTvF-Pc0HI1HHm6NIH-aImHsTug9iZvSR6r_X62k5zjpQkmfqg5Sln7rJhc/s1600-h/IMG_2628.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx2S6YHCAQdGtMG3jFODZTmYnRjeqUdI5_n89Ge-QZX5hHICVXyx99ce4xQzL1GTBRO0vbULe_i7IvSA0bvTvF-Pc0HI1HHm6NIH-aImHsTug9iZvSR6r_X62k5zjpQkmfqg5Sln7rJhc/s320/IMG_2628.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280693468090193570" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The last week of the semester before finals was full of studying and last-minute paper writing (not all of the students are English majors..*ahem*). My final paper for my History of London class was on the Christmas Truce of 1914, so I utilized the reading room in the Imperial War Museum. After making an appointment, I was given access to their archives and was able to read about the unofficial truce from first-hand accounts written in diaries and letters. It was pretty incredible to read about this event as if it had just happened. As one of the soldiers wrote, "I shall never forget it, it was one of the highlights of my life." After researching my topic, I wandered through the rest of the WWI exhibit and was struck by the propaganda posters being played on a slideshow. A couple of these are shown below. Guilt was a common technique employed in designing these posters, as can be seen by the little girl saying "Daddy, what did YOU do in the Great War?"<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNxUg-hAJbkVTfb7vo_vgIKny3xJ-2jN_IibZ5ZoCRwre1GIwiGb16tbGqU_4ae9OIr65LN82PICbzb2U7hSrKJ0eRdgCc-ZN6Kf5X98v8ZFDVN9xEW38A7TKMN-TscR5788yMimXzhfg/s1600-h/IMG_2700.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNxUg-hAJbkVTfb7vo_vgIKny3xJ-2jN_IibZ5ZoCRwre1GIwiGb16tbGqU_4ae9OIr65LN82PICbzb2U7hSrKJ0eRdgCc-ZN6Kf5X98v8ZFDVN9xEW38A7TKMN-TscR5788yMimXzhfg/s320/IMG_2700.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280693461992709074" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCozZeNTpEzbPwxa4esoafbDa0Vhm4WVgl0CONJqOSVEeMV42DjWZ_Yp0yrk0G_J2ecwHQkeioH3l1_f-5IFA1MmFxOuaRbX5q6NC95lC4AsVv5iNClfAAWdPAKju8tDl9NGM3lyn1kE/s1600-h/IMG_2677.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCozZeNTpEzbPwxa4esoafbDa0Vhm4WVgl0CONJqOSVEeMV42DjWZ_Yp0yrk0G_J2ecwHQkeioH3l1_f-5IFA1MmFxOuaRbX5q6NC95lC4AsVv5iNClfAAWdPAKju8tDl9NGM3lyn1kE/s320/IMG_2677.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280693457173676002" border="0" /></a><br /><br />After finishing our finals (I had three finals and two final essays. In total, I wrote 10 essays for that final week), we wandered around London some more. Below, Craig, Katie and Kaitlin are excited to be finished with exams. We looked in Hemley's, which is a toy store. When we were walking through it, we found a hidden staircase to the side of the building that was decorated with a Chronicles of Narnia theme.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5-0sDwyDO1Au2oJKI66gRRhsGEOWiSsAK1kGmSV3vRqfNbgwK3zBkNi2mjXAGyVjqu6IbhzZej33ismkfrfm4Zpbl8X3JxVA4gJMPIDb-mNCWFyW_7KPqIT0U4HU2TRgoMPALSWbsSAs/s1600-h/IMG_2708.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5-0sDwyDO1Au2oJKI66gRRhsGEOWiSsAK1kGmSV3vRqfNbgwK3zBkNi2mjXAGyVjqu6IbhzZej33ismkfrfm4Zpbl8X3JxVA4gJMPIDb-mNCWFyW_7KPqIT0U4HU2TRgoMPALSWbsSAs/s320/IMG_2708.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280695788815663170" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNUNns1YkhGUJK2saKV8bRs9I57qKbHBrAUS7ul1Ry7XoF1zN_AG_Ie0NJXIoYRvEa1w5IpZFsyGmEHOfvkgrM0wTKGSvHAKn9CWTkwsPR37Vj7938CblBRX7etlQJ9KRra6eqznpuVa8/s1600-h/IMG_2710.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNUNns1YkhGUJK2saKV8bRs9I57qKbHBrAUS7ul1Ry7XoF1zN_AG_Ie0NJXIoYRvEa1w5IpZFsyGmEHOfvkgrM0wTKGSvHAKn9CWTkwsPR37Vj7938CblBRX7etlQJ9KRra6eqznpuVa8/s320/IMG_2710.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280695792132609202" border="0" /></a><br /><br />That night, Kristen and I went to Wagamama for dinner. Despite the long travel hours, it was a great weekend. Our ultimate aim was to get to Dublin, but since the cheapest flight flew into Belfast, we thought we should explore the city a little. Before leaving, we found a taxi service in Belfast that gives tours, so we requested one. Ireland has a tumultuous history with Great Britain, and Northern Ireland still belongs to the United Kingdom. Our tour guide took us around the Catholic portion of the city and told us about "The Troubles." Peace between the Catholics and Protestants has been a somewhat recent development, within the last decade or so. There is still a wall between the two portions of the city, and the gates close every night at 6:00 pm. As seen in the pictures below, political murals cover the walls. Sadly, the first reflects Ireland's, and most of Europe's, opinion about President Bush. It shows President Bush sucking the oil (and money) out of the Middle East, with the straw supported by Great Britain.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc3opv-3_nf8m2kiK0VlQ2sAOT6H3blmx9LMBunM_kp932vHniD_dOrDgEpecD7qEfOwkteRdbtwl2bdgSgBrYRFjH2gg80hh_yZL0-hLcNliZfpdZphuVTuvaJBY63lIu0KdgN8_75D8/s1600-h/IMG_2531.JPG"></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA3gO1gvzhLR9tB2NDr5AZ_aHujJrMzka8ExLtk24rAxi1rQ0IKeKxiqKQ9kHbDyHjj_HiUr0JVIJPDX3J3JSkNhA5MCV5UoqTZMz6kuAhDtCsQmkaxn5xHK93Atpjy04g6gV90TfRMGE/s1600-h/IMG_2336.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA3gO1gvzhLR9tB2NDr5AZ_aHujJrMzka8ExLtk24rAxi1rQ0IKeKxiqKQ9kHbDyHjj_HiUr0JVIJPDX3J3JSkNhA5MCV5UoqTZMz6kuAhDtCsQmkaxn5xHK93Atpjy04g6gV90TfRMGE/s320/IMG_2336.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272544794417010578" border="0" /></a><br /><br />A few weeks ago, my Censorship class watched a new movie called "Hunger." It was about some members of the IRA who were imprisoned and went on a hunger strike to get Maggie Thatcher to recognize them as political prisoners. Bobby Sands, whose mural is shown below, was the leader and was even elected to parliament in Westminster before he died from the hunger strike. I didn't know anything about Ireland's history before coming to England, and it was really interesting to see the movie and then the actual city where it took place.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLtW-2ImdZjV9CWXAwMn45SaRwJWr0jfdEReuzhEZvfRJ7uiWzTaxRdGWNd7-TGeNH1QZ5_lydLpJafm_7UDN3pYzsRm1Vy53M8TKhyphenhyphenz0v7Cz-zxT8JqVdHH5uI3hi6scFEnyFpX_DOoA/s1600-h/IMG_2344.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLtW-2ImdZjV9CWXAwMn45SaRwJWr0jfdEReuzhEZvfRJ7uiWzTaxRdGWNd7-TGeNH1QZ5_lydLpJafm_7UDN3pYzsRm1Vy53M8TKhyphenhyphenz0v7Cz-zxT8JqVdHH5uI3hi6scFEnyFpX_DOoA/s320/IMG_2344.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272544803053095618" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Below is the green wall that separates the Catholics from the Protestants.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNMj8yDFtnCEb9PpPb5dOUCwtFnfFJwRXcEE2p9oEVgh5lO8HbGzikmEM6mjLQRi97gje0GNJyryg2Px1dqhSkfd_MJtJ16KSE_vI3Za5cv9ivyZ1eZZL2WW5xI_CVheFMDK-uo_Jo4Ks/s1600-h/IMG_2355.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNMj8yDFtnCEb9PpPb5dOUCwtFnfFJwRXcEE2p9oEVgh5lO8HbGzikmEM6mjLQRi97gje0GNJyryg2Px1dqhSkfd_MJtJ16KSE_vI3Za5cv9ivyZ1eZZL2WW5xI_CVheFMDK-uo_Jo4Ks/s320/IMG_2355.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272544814092560146" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Below is another mural. After several attempts and multiple combinations of walkers, we all managed to have our picture taken. It's actually a pretty busy intersection, and there were several other groups trying to get their photo taken, too. In one attempt, we were halfway across the street when we heard the driver from a stopped car yell, "It's suppose to be blokes, not girls!"<br /><br />Disclaimer: I'm aware of the inaccuracies in this photo, and I apologize to fellow Beatles fans for it.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNf2FQceiUSn7b7QltqSVCPUNzgFHo5T2SnFEw_fI4AtoIHzo08reEDMySdMEGwF3AavVu1HVuc_Gdy6ra9sMeXqZ5KKpajO0BpQf1ZkwRFWMhrhxHEAZzPYMSbZxByaTlOWmcNolVz0g/s1600-h/n53601909_30712207_6206.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNf2FQceiUSn7b7QltqSVCPUNzgFHo5T2SnFEw_fI4AtoIHzo08reEDMySdMEGwF3AavVu1HVuc_Gdy6ra9sMeXqZ5KKpajO0BpQf1ZkwRFWMhrhxHEAZzPYMSbZxByaTlOWmcNolVz0g/s320/n53601909_30712207_6206.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266643824844506114" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqcdARN8Tsa0wFdYZuemXFNbwgs_TnZLNqrIpOfn5gWlOXaa2Viww6DVyZRs0mGCXEUN4peFaJseL5z2sxMBWZyitv_4up3BBzAY7jWapfKHD7abf2bIj_D8yNpAUBiXt9hoLP2vFotdw/s1600-h/IMG_1672.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqcdARN8Tsa0wFdYZuemXFNbwgs_TnZLNqrIpOfn5gWlOXaa2Viww6DVyZRs0mGCXEUN4peFaJseL5z2sxMBWZyitv_4up3BBzAY7jWapfKHD7abf2bIj_D8yNpAUBiXt9hoLP2vFotdw/s320/IMG_1672.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266643832124015362" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Outside Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded most of their songs from 1962 to 1970, including the Abbey Road album. So, after my Shakespeare class ended, some friends and I stopped by Leicester Square to witness the excitement and possibly spy a few famous people. People lined up to get inside the red carpet all night, and since we had arrived only a couple hours before the movie was scheduled to start, we weren't able to enter. We did, however, find good standing spots outside where we were able to see the stars for a second after they exited their cars and before they entered the red carpet. Then, we were able to see them again after they were interviewed by the MC and before they started to walk down a flight of stairs before entering the Odeon Cinema. Neither opportunity allowed us to take pictures, however, since we only saw the stars for a few seconds total. We spent three hours standing and freezing our toes off, but we were able to see Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench, and both Prince William and Prince Harry.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiESuDKu4mZa_XjSYFwdk2xiLb7arqyDvwfMUx1B0sQgxl05PKf6_7Lb_KBbLH9im5UHcjgHwane8rYk7pcPFOdcH17CbRvSj1jjMOF22jq0yB2V6Wx5RIwefPXWVXeMpL3G3OkllBfVjo/s1600-h/IMG_2140.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiESuDKu4mZa_XjSYFwdk2xiLb7arqyDvwfMUx1B0sQgxl05PKf6_7Lb_KBbLH9im5UHcjgHwane8rYk7pcPFOdcH17CbRvSj1jjMOF22jq0yB2V6Wx5RIwefPXWVXeMpL3G3OkllBfVjo/s320/IMG_2140.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264759845472808258" border="0" /></a><br /><br />In the photo below, the screens where we were able to watch trailers for the movie and interviews with the stars. Afterward, some friends and I watched Hocus Pocus. On Saturday, we planned out the whole day, starting with a trip to the Harry Potter sites, including Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross. In the afternoon, we watched Casino Royale in preparation for Sunday, when we watched Quantum of Solace at the local cinema(two weeks before it premieres in the US).<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHW8YMUwJ0LGSk67Pna4yFOZzhG4sbW6nem2_xBH-bSCRDhGOXsMtPGUtqRwld7oobH8lOhwFYSjvFdyfhQbiXR4HOhnvTRMBs_q1LrT3LZMUbDqZkhmY6fUmPrL5iY2iYL_aLYH7DCLk/s1600-h/n9377946_52454825_4843.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHW8YMUwJ0LGSk67Pna4yFOZzhG4sbW6nem2_xBH-bSCRDhGOXsMtPGUtqRwld7oobH8lOhwFYSjvFdyfhQbiXR4HOhnvTRMBs_q1LrT3LZMUbDqZkhmY6fUmPrL5iY2iYL_aLYH7DCLk/s320/n9377946_52454825_4843.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264768856434314034" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGW2EtlAGfhJdSylcCJCjyoUmpbarfmOW7WZ-5iMvLh8ksLTv9m6cx4SuIsDdWHNpKZYIFvMwpBo3vSJHUD8jz1zm2U8JkuaOFbr6UHYI6vAoBksAj4b8eZKehaIWzz16gedCIkWUXqW0/s1600-h/n9377946_52454833_6783.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGW2EtlAGfhJdSylcCJCjyoUmpbarfmOW7WZ-5iMvLh8ksLTv9m6cx4SuIsDdWHNpKZYIFvMwpBo3vSJHUD8jz1zm2U8JkuaOFbr6UHYI6vAoBksAj4b8eZKehaIWzz16gedCIkWUXqW0/s320/n9377946_52454833_6783.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264768857991188306" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQbsTB0dtjJjePxasCL013M8DH-g1l1mdQ1ehWbmlAu2qg-VP5bFdRWlNTHQQIzlpjznODMVm0qfOKX3Cq85sny-fzrvPTHMU8jQgczbjCA5QjRoc7JawGUFQOUkraCvjPnNQ9BQHMccM/s1600-h/IMG_1398.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQbsTB0dtjJjePxasCL013M8DH-g1l1mdQ1ehWbmlAu2qg-VP5bFdRWlNTHQQIzlpjznODMVm0qfOKX3Cq85sny-fzrvPTHMU8jQgczbjCA5QjRoc7JawGUFQOUkraCvjPnNQ9BQHMccM/s320/IMG_1398.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264768851340453938" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Tomorrow (Wednesday) is Guy Fawkes Day, and all week different parks in London are having fireworks in honor of it. Since this was a good opportunity to travel around Europe, a couple of friends and I decided on Rome. We found cheap flights and a good hostel and spent four and a half days exploring Rome. The first picture is of our hostel in Rome (Kaitlin is on the left, Kristen on the right). The hostel was on the outskirts of the city, but it felt like a campground. In the 1800s, the Royal Academy Schools ruled the art world, including the painting styles, colors, and techniques. A student at the academy was restricted not only on his subject matter, but on the colors of paint and even the brush he used, based on his age and grade. In 1848, a group of 7 rebellious, young painters and writers formed a secret society. Believing that art went wrong with Raphael (and the Renaissance), they refered to themselves as Pre-Raphaelites and strove to achieve art resembling that of medieval art. Their subject matter was Biblical stories, Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri, and other poems, including anything with a moral story. These painters would mix their own colors and paint subjects that the academy would not allow. While the Brotherhood only lasted a few years, the Pre-Raphaelite thought persisted. For our class trip a couple of weeks ago, our tutor took us up to Oxford for the day. It was a packed day, but our guide was lucky enough to get us into some great places to see the remains of some of the Pre-Raphaelite art, mostly in stained glass.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaaSuiWC6KwCt-RaR_omNTu-ODz0EC4lFN_ZOoC8wdf7BBPiiE1MsLiwrQieOufcwD4SXzabDpR1TZzl_JEzh0j88htGM_wyqZinMkoKR0j7neZ3uHcUHYxJ3fp8TQu_ynhQtoH79zXS4/s1600-h/IMG_1524.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaaSuiWC6KwCt-RaR_omNTu-ODz0EC4lFN_ZOoC8wdf7BBPiiE1MsLiwrQieOufcwD4SXzabDpR1TZzl_JEzh0j88htGM_wyqZinMkoKR0j7neZ3uHcUHYxJ3fp8TQu_ynhQtoH79zXS4/s320/IMG_1524.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258470088693138258" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmRbcTlb35rd7SIQRXCkVYOMprBv5KmWibgjpJY-wsw2-9qYB-B-QaeSFeBmgraxlAGnLtyiOIgcJ0o4tT_q3JInoqEu8nvyTsgiOkkICPibrn1_S9zuKp9Sy8xtUL0HDyrQaDDabD6dg/s1600-h/IMG_1521.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmRbcTlb35rd7SIQRXCkVYOMprBv5KmWibgjpJY-wsw2-9qYB-B-QaeSFeBmgraxlAGnLtyiOIgcJ0o4tT_q3JInoqEu8nvyTsgiOkkICPibrn1_S9zuKp9Sy8xtUL0HDyrQaDDabD6dg/s320/IMG_1521.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258470071892979138" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwAyceq6RXB1Fw9OqshW86Ghu2K4b1M3SXUk6BmDe6Lt5bonpxcrIZFAig0IhQFvJSVyu8hdXQJMz3KDm2qBHa4zYu6UfJ_wlZ7bpYwXmFQO0f5sdSMueNMPKaLRk4XSgEbuZxgKXQm4A/s1600-h/IMG_1522.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwAyceq6RXB1Fw9OqshW86Ghu2K4b1M3SXUk6BmDe6Lt5bonpxcrIZFAig0IhQFvJSVyu8hdXQJMz3KDm2qBHa4zYu6UfJ_wlZ7bpYwXmFQO0f5sdSMueNMPKaLRk4XSgEbuZxgKXQm4A/s320/IMG_1522.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258470075804033858" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFpoK-eDcmQIcyg6kXeqCIHFyEknYvMC1Cg43LxgPIAT7roQ4oM_pD0vM1KW6_JKKriaeGK3vxdrg4UEUBMqPKrPp5hXAkx9Zv_dIPD5iTwCQgmA4i3wWAZxZvguE9pRrG54SRek8TwH8/s1600-h/IMG_1539.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFpoK-eDcmQIcyg6kXeqCIHFyEknYvMC1Cg43LxgPIAT7roQ4oM_pD0vM1KW6_JKKriaeGK3vxdrg4UEUBMqPKrPp5hXAkx9Zv_dIPD5iTwCQgmA4i3wWAZxZvguE9pRrG54SRek8TwH8/s320/IMG_1539.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258470094322494162" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRjbsHiZqNrIW8pL-w46o3dt0wKReYCeU4d_HgKr3J4zjD6UbaC52PC1QZcse5btZyVC9Q4tiWCohk4TPu1SxQdVf5JH_9zqMRMtN8eKtENFOpRauC999HGqWyp77Oh0NEt6OsmAGUkqk/s1600-h/IMG_1552.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRjbsHiZqNrIW8pL-w46o3dt0wKReYCeU4d_HgKr3J4zjD6UbaC52PC1QZcse5btZyVC9Q4tiWCohk4TPu1SxQdVf5JH_9zqMRMtN8eKtENFOpRauC999HGqWyp77Oh0NEt6OsmAGUkqk/s320/IMG_1552.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258470099888607186" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXn5TLpqS93acVoCPT3bw_1YpwhDj2qi39sRdxYPlrGRNScdHCL-E9jevqM6hrAg3IDk0WpjcrOXsmFhpKrSHzWPDJyqhPaQmqXy4YyvMA3gIfHyjLS600fzyENg1-XA4CanNaNx5UoY4/s1600-h/IMG_1567.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXn5TLpqS93acVoCPT3bw_1YpwhDj2qi39sRdxYPlrGRNScdHCL-E9jevqM6hrAg3IDk0WpjcrOXsmFhpKrSHzWPDJyqhPaQmqXy4YyvMA3gIfHyjLS600fzyENg1-XA4CanNaNx5UoY4/s320/IMG_1567.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258472040352495714" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The library below was a very special privelege for us. Usually only Oxford students are allowed in, but our guide pulled some strings. The library is the building on the right in the picture below. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burnes Jones, and William Morris painted the murals on the ceiling. It is a giant, slow-moving ferris wheel that overlooks the Thames, Houses of Parliament, Westminster, and a good portion of London. We originally wanted to take a sunset "flight," so we could catch the views both in the daylight and at night. However, since it was a Saturday, the line was so long that by the time we boarded, the sun had already set. It was beautiful, but the glass/plastic windows reflected the flash of our cameras, so we were left with either very blurry pictures, or under-exposed pictures (an example of each is below).<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimIasT3R3zKnu2y8VKeBWgPibt6916H-6_N3AmTr5KZiXNk8fMFMtkr-s3rZc7QAGSQGQcAWYIjh53RnkjQ66cuBzs_g4_Tec4USNvTXCkDuih2t3a2IA81bKZGDElD90HtySjhlEg_k4/s1600-h/IMG_1597.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimIasT3R3zKnu2y8VKeBWgPibt6916H-6_N3AmTr5KZiXNk8fMFMtkr-s3rZc7QAGSQGQcAWYIjh53RnkjQ66cuBzs_g4_Tec4USNvTXCkDuih2t3a2IA81bKZGDElD90HtySjhlEg_k4/s320/IMG_1597.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258474596793153778" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2KQKMRpwYhRV0jKATRgUeaPm3clhBh2_GXLgslq_kfzu4JRfKMs-iq6z9sRe35KcATL71nFE2gm_WvhVTSzdncIhdkZx7Ocgv-cCPNotVDp0sdVTQkbnFotSR3NAztUxtc6W1jJp6B18/s1600-h/IMG_1600.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2KQKMRpwYhRV0jKATRgUeaPm3clhBh2_GXLgslq_kfzu4JRfKMs-iq6z9sRe35KcATL71nFE2gm_WvhVTSzdncIhdkZx7Ocgv-cCPNotVDp0sdVTQkbnFotSR3NAztUxtc6W1jJp6B18/s320/IMG_1600.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258474610592992738" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM9y9k2NiZEvgqr55rNYacKiJ_vj-yjJXeNFaSNdy235S5-MchmXIXZ2qTN9rhC_bI986mEWjjMf5EEngselty5A4oRvx_xSEq_lJi7lNyA7hH6P96vws0WKyAKIp0ytqO5fGArGC5Mxk/s1600-h/IMG_1604.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM9y9k2NiZEvgqr55rNYacKiJ_vj-yjJXeNFaSNdy235S5-MchmXIXZ2qTN9rhC_bI986mEWjjMf5EEngselty5A4oRvx_xSEq_lJi7lNyA7hH6P96vws0WKyAKIp0ytqO5fGArGC5Mxk/s320/IMG_1604.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258474614070039362" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The picture below is possibly the best of my batch, but the colors are not nearly as vibrant as in-person. Over the past weekend, IES planned a trip to Belgium for my history class. While not compulsory, it was a great opportunity, and most of the students in the program participated in it. Over two days, we traveled by coach bus (over the Channel on a ferry and through France), visited a WWI museum, attended the Last Post at the Menin Gate, walked the ramparts of the original city, visited three war cemetaries, walked through reconstructions of the trenches, and enjoyed the chocolate, waffles, and beer. We traveled to Ypres (Ieper, also pronounced "Wipers" by the British troops during the war). The trenches along the Western Front surrounded Ypres on 3 sides, making it a target in the crossfire from nearly all angles. As a result, the city was completely destroyed during the war. In the decades after the war, the people of the city rebuilt it stone-for-stone, brick-for-brick. The first picture is of the market in the middle of the square.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiehDPktnomHgpohRZJRy2wBqenVmJ6hmtiZo3Zk55OFZmgLUgtVfSPUR6iRw0Wk4TxQc55a2yU1m4FyRch0xgPVdTtjm1iTCmAGcYtqLMUNqaDz2rEJTDaCHL6XcUEPdqtCPLI5hFfkKA/s1600-h/IMG_1446.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiehDPktnomHgpohRZJRy2wBqenVmJ6hmtiZo3Zk55OFZmgLUgtVfSPUR6iRw0Wk4TxQc55a2yU1m4FyRch0xgPVdTtjm1iTCmAGcYtqLMUNqaDz2rEJTDaCHL6XcUEPdqtCPLI5hFfkKA/s320/IMG_1446.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253720398930273234" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />The Menin Gate was built as a memorial to all the soldiers who were not found. The soil in Belgium is a thick clay, and it was flooded during the war to halt the German's advance. As a result, thousands and thousands of men were lost beneath it. Names are carved over all the walls, inside and out, of the gate...and it is one of three memorials to the missing. There were hundreds of thousands of men lost in this war, and bodies are still being uncovered in the land. In area of land fought over, an average of 30 men died per square meter.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY2zPEcOJ6gpvLZwRgm5Pjv9Zr1MfHo-P6it_D5_yH1wNlhr61s9zPYthlfhcAYSuEcun7PtrQhJYTsy4VRIvkyDRvpnUY9DrYcxmcKcW-hzqHF07DZyhqZw4P1f1Tbcj0BJcYzCpVI7E/s1600-h/IMG_1419.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY2zPEcOJ6gpvLZwRgm5Pjv9Zr1MfHo-P6it_D5_yH1wNlhr61s9zPYthlfhcAYSuEcun7PtrQhJYTsy4VRIvkyDRvpnUY9DrYcxmcKcW-hzqHF07DZyhqZw4P1f1Tbcj0BJcYzCpVI7E/s320/IMG_1419.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253720396557338290" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_zywKHvjKgEYRgm0ZJpOKZSghOlER7TndKzShC5YoFYR49d8ea_J67dZNHNbUU6D6JfevF09wvMboxkkTai3XcNv-Inwa7VqwxGV6xCNAaCEIHwE-YlXHzMe4ngwg9ebRF-S5xX4Dmso/s1600-h/IMG_1426.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_zywKHvjKgEYRgm0ZJpOKZSghOlER7TndKzShC5YoFYR49d8ea_J67dZNHNbUU6D6JfevF09wvMboxkkTai3XcNv-Inwa7VqwxGV6xCNAaCEIHwE-YlXHzMe4ngwg9ebRF-S5xX4Dmso/s320/IMG_1426.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253720393326871090" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Below is a medical center not far from the front. Short days ago<br />We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow<br />Loved and were loved, and now we lie<br />in Flanders fields<br /><br />Take up our quarrel with the foe:<br />To you from failing hands we throw<br />The torch: be yours to hold it high,<br />If ye break faith with us who die.<br />We shall not sleep, though poppies grow<br />In Flanders fields.<br /><br />Major John McCrae<br /><br /><br />The most haunting of all the information that we learned was of the firing squads. To make examples of deserters, British officials would take a man who had been sentenced to death and select 12 men of that man's unit to form a firing squad. That man would then be tied to a post and blindfolded. The firing squad would then enter the courtyard and pick up their already-loaded guns, one of which would be loaded with a blank. At the signal, the squad would fire upon the target pinned to the doomed man's chest. In one case, the man's brother was assigned to the firing squad (the officers soon realized and removed him, but it is still a very haunting tale). These examples were distributed among the army, but not the public. Only in 1989 was this information released to the public. My history tutor (shown in the picture below) and a colleague spent 11 years tracking down the names of the doomed men, and only two years ago did the British Government issue apologies to their families. The poem, written by Rudyard Kipling, on the sign says:<br /><br />The Coward<br /><br />I could not look on Death,<br />which being known,<br />Men led him to me,<br />blindfolded and alone.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj46MK3xCtMsZ-JAFzyNxvSN5EFOKxBMYsxKZYmXzuWodYWvZphWqXt5wczDKCFSzNPBF1ylt2c-JfrEp0EZDbE_zV2QPT3PjIDPpKHpHcAh3MzgtPm1x7qTM6g5b04Yot9d6yyGSi-UkQ/s1600-h/IMG_1507.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj46MK3xCtMsZ-JAFzyNxvSN5EFOKxBMYsxKZYmXzuWodYWvZphWqXt5wczDKCFSzNPBF1ylt2c-JfrEp0EZDbE_zV2QPT3PjIDPpKHpHcAh3MzgtPm1x7qTM6g5b04Yot9d6yyGSi-UkQ/s320/IMG_1507.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254043494584456290" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5584456333792249337.post-83233331500415223892008-09-26T13:35:00.000-07:002008-09-28T04:40:13.680-07:00There's No Place Like LondonClasses have really started to pick up this past week. I have my first "quiz" in my history class next week, and two other classes assigned the midterm paper topics. The second half of my art history class consisted of a trip to the National Gallery to see some works by the Pre-Raphaelites in a special exhibition. The black-and-white photo below is of Trafalger Square from the front of the National Gallery (the Clock Tower can been seen in the distance).<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimhsoXV-I0JbtmrY7yNztG40H0wgMr-Le0eEpNsWmoXdgjrm_rJRf6F5tbbONOTS7dttayyuE9f5pAxf_r5aq7lN2ZE4bcK6tlMJZyjvfQbYuqd8oV9rGwwg1e1eE3UdGShXaclwnYOd0/s1600-h/IMG_1317.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimhsoXV-I0JbtmrY7yNztG40H0wgMr-Le0eEpNsWmoXdgjrm_rJRf6F5tbbONOTS7dttayyuE9f5pAxf_r5aq7lN2ZE4bcK6tlMJZyjvfQbYuqd8oV9rGwwg1e1eE3UdGShXaclwnYOd0/s320/IMG_1317.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250434522034890274" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Across the intersection from our local tube station is a Lamborghini dealership. Unfortunately, it was sold out. In fact, it's sold out for the rest of the season (which ends next week). However, the ticketmaster told us that if we wanted to queue up 90 minutes before the performance, we might get any unclaimed tickets. So we tried, and luckily, we did! And since we were in line so early, we got standing room next to the stage, which was close enough for the actors to look directly at us when saying some of their lines.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlCNugx8ZI3YTg7TxOduIqdL-m7ycyUvzTC5SYhNXcXlApQCMC5el_27Al16KcTB4tjyLeo487CES9SMI5eATcA9aQqrZPcSZeudRrIz6Nrsz8_rpkSyRB1_JAYtREEJgprGChLykHXj4/s1600-h/IMG_1369.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlCNugx8ZI3YTg7TxOduIqdL-m7ycyUvzTC5SYhNXcXlApQCMC5el_27Al16KcTB4tjyLeo487CES9SMI5eATcA9aQqrZPcSZeudRrIz6Nrsz8_rpkSyRB1_JAYtREEJgprGChLykHXj4/s320/IMG_1369.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250438381404458498" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC-hfiYo3_NqCpqU7tyHsMcVqBmTM6vCtypkAFtkjaJc2KPUCN8lcKZxUVPxXUjbVVMmqXDVyQIFmv9QJ_XeAYBWotulGEU_ENaElFMnGAnpRgtjoVfVvbLApd_H9GWUwNIQfh3-gf2YI/s1600-h/IMG_1372.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC-hfiYo3_NqCpqU7tyHsMcVqBmTM6vCtypkAFtkjaJc2KPUCN8lcKZxUVPxXUjbVVMmqXDVyQIFmv9QJ_XeAYBWotulGEU_ENaElFMnGAnpRgtjoVfVvbLApd_H9GWUwNIQfh3-gf2YI/s320/IMG_1372.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250438399162478610" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGjC8HB7IOgR51X1cptKXZPg9LMzxFbojWrsWcUwfSZ-ycduEA0U4wDWtC2M0TG6ATNKdYCJHkEzfGPyGQSTAj5DLu62DHt8zuVaeKXomudRTsXyWzlb2ZWy-TS-mAZOqqwee1hbeOt7o/s1600-h/IMG_1379.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGjC8HB7IOgR51X1cptKXZPg9LMzxFbojWrsWcUwfSZ-ycduEA0U4wDWtC2M0TG6ATNKdYCJHkEzfGPyGQSTAj5DLu62DHt8zuVaeKXomudRTsXyWzlb2ZWy-TS-mAZOqqwee1hbeOt7o/s320/IMG_1379.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250438395448842674" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5584456333792249337.post-79810948303729808092008-09-19T14:43:00.000-07:002008-09-19T15:26:26.503-07:00Stonehenge, Bath, and BeyondIES plans several excursions for students, but most of our weekends are free, so last weekend, a few of the girls and I got out our "diaries" (British for planners) and scheduled a few excursions of our own. The big excursion this week was a trip to Stonehenge and Bath. We booked a tour with a local touring company, and our first stop was Stonehenge.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9XnUoZLd8fTAC3Ucyu0lN3PyD7o6RRpfm9Zq4Iu2WE5L6SVpc8mN6N6rDjETTKvlF3XktAS8toy-weC8K9XIC_e5dHa9XMhCjbZuLxtFP5v_ett4wc59mI4DpfLKVINy1cuMjYXQx38o/s1600-h/IMG_1172.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9XnUoZLd8fTAC3Ucyu0lN3PyD7o6RRpfm9Zq4Iu2WE5L6SVpc8mN6N6rDjETTKvlF3XktAS8toy-weC8K9XIC_e5dHa9XMhCjbZuLxtFP5v_ett4wc59mI4DpfLKVINy1cuMjYXQx38o/s320/IMG_1172.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247853668116300098" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOYQdOqHfUnOPhyh_om6Oynli2p-lDHhICZQm3qlKghuXfclkX9lmSJrxY7-i5bmsTPuLKMJyAGctLKJfbc9G2B6kU6L8QCYfk9t7dAOTtqoe_agbInbbZb34zmPVQi6ATqQeYu23M2rw/s1600-h/IMG_1154.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOYQdOqHfUnOPhyh_om6Oynli2p-lDHhICZQm3qlKghuXfclkX9lmSJrxY7-i5bmsTPuLKMJyAGctLKJfbc9G2B6kU6L8QCYfk9t7dAOTtqoe_agbInbbZb34zmPVQi6ATqQeYu23M2rw/s320/IMG_1154.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247853662501806690" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />After a walk around the mysterious stones (which are situated between two motorways...not quite as surreal and serene as they want you to believe), we got back on the bus and continued on to one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. Since it is a contagious and incurable disease, his subjects would not let him back, and he was forced to become a pig farmer. However, since leprosy is so contagious, the pigs developed leprosy as well. This king would wander the countryside with his sick pigs, until one day, the pigs returned from wallowing completely healed. The king was amazed, so he followed them the next day to the wallowing spot and discovered a hot spring. Since the pigs were healed, the king thought he would try the healing powers of the spring on himself. Miraculously, the king was healed as well, so he returned to his subjects and resumed his rule, but in doing so, he relocated his kingdom to the hot spring. And that is the story of the beginnings of Bath. This summer, several local artists were given a chance to decorate pig statues, and these statues will be auctioned off in a few weeks, but it was fun to walk around and see all the pigs on display. I have pictures of 25 different pigs that we saw in our ramblings around the city. My favourite: the binary pig below.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJhKZVNCnap2FIXCSgkMB0QYo-ygp_prPO5uSpYHgCej0SyNwdkRiNiiXhCH4PxEiuI5n-wB3L2Wy5EdHzydYP5wgQnQhrisCMKf8olKTIsr70_ODEgN6oIPVrJI83o34bVDTflWUw57w/s1600-h/IMG_1188.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJhKZVNCnap2FIXCSgkMB0QYo-ygp_prPO5uSpYHgCej0SyNwdkRiNiiXhCH4PxEiuI5n-wB3L2Wy5EdHzydYP5wgQnQhrisCMKf8olKTIsr70_ODEgN6oIPVrJI83o34bVDTflWUw57w/s320/IMG_1188.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247853677308692658" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbK_FTYC3T0PZj9leaQoHqbiURrhzT_U_GL3C_WPAaVGqKWp2RYaElJVVfHzeW_qu0QRr4nEwAY0XRPEMK6Yu5YV6GMin9Rz39Av6Yej62_5lM1YZSiAsnb7W6SWsucrtyIH0fg5sUQTc/s1600-h/IMG_1274.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbK_FTYC3T0PZj9leaQoHqbiURrhzT_U_GL3C_WPAaVGqKWp2RYaElJVVfHzeW_qu0QRr4nEwAY0XRPEMK6Yu5YV6GMin9Rz39Av6Yej62_5lM1YZSiAsnb7W6SWsucrtyIH0fg5sUQTc/s320/IMG_1274.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247855894919893458" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5584456333792249337.post-64962996927881334342008-09-14T09:12:00.000-07:002008-09-14T15:39:40.326-07:00The Week In ReviewThis past week has been pretty busy. We started classes, so for at least 2.5 hours a day, Monday through Thursday, I'm learning at the IES Center in the Bloomsbury district. Our schedules keep us pretty busy, but we did manage to have some fun this week. Wednesday was not only my 21st birthday, but Kyle's (another girl in the program) as well. To celebrate, the girls and I went out to dinner at Made in Italy, a restaurant just down the street, where I had my first glass of wine. We then walked back to the residence hall, but as soon as we set foot in the lobby, the fire alarm sounded. The pictures below are of the girls with the fire truck behind us (the reflectors). The photographer for the bottom picture told us to look scared...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbk7QqgRSO0YMikJ5a3R29_5IgODBoHl3xWe5uCswlDFhkPj95KJ2kmxNLfKOrT3Orwi-DrAzHoBEXKVjvPpt1UHeAjGqdOCEJ1m84slGKVqgkoLfb6bXYunhE88gMcdT7Jc2le-pkCZ4/s1600-h/n9377946_51148238_482.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbk7QqgRSO0YMikJ5a3R29_5IgODBoHl3xWe5uCswlDFhkPj95KJ2kmxNLfKOrT3Orwi-DrAzHoBEXKVjvPpt1UHeAjGqdOCEJ1m84slGKVqgkoLfb6bXYunhE88gMcdT7Jc2le-pkCZ4/s320/n9377946_51148238_482.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245912233279660754" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKVf-VZgg-IzQjnd3Zy1lyzAfz6cq3wT17UwgSaATPgJ8U-mTi9WSPYz1kA4Zfj-A63WioMOE56d_u1NbktgTuqrf0uCVI1WXxwruC_zPFTQzHBOvVUaMZng0cz1yLbAsDJ_ZjwDX8q7Y/s1600-h/n9377946_51148239_847.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKVf-VZgg-IzQjnd3Zy1lyzAfz6cq3wT17UwgSaATPgJ8U-mTi9WSPYz1kA4Zfj-A63WioMOE56d_u1NbktgTuqrf0uCVI1WXxwruC_zPFTQzHBOvVUaMZng0cz1yLbAsDJ_ZjwDX8q7Y/s320/n9377946_51148239_847.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245919776840728434" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />While waiting for the fire alarm to clear, Traci and I finally got to take the roommate picture.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUpu6pJFVqWT60Z64e89_FEYdHkWVkMJ76We1askAU4_c1riaOoBJKQhNO5xpne0_8Uu_GgLAE9u3FfiWS2jRG41RHzuQ4esGcTtYFjDveTDC4PqDqVtZ46qeSSbiAkDMeGa72eNtjDXs/s1600-h/n9377946_51148243_1943.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUpu6pJFVqWT60Z64e89_FEYdHkWVkMJ76We1askAU4_c1riaOoBJKQhNO5xpne0_8Uu_GgLAE9u3FfiWS2jRG41RHzuQ4esGcTtYFjDveTDC4PqDqVtZ46qeSSbiAkDMeGa72eNtjDXs/s320/n9377946_51148243_1943.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245912321154278578" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />IES doesn't schedule any classes for Fridays, so on our first Friday we decided to visit the Tower of London. My only class started at 10:00 am, and after over two hours of introduction to the idea of censorship and what it means in Britain, I had the afternoon free. A couple of the girls and I wanted to go down to the Thames and see the Houses of Parliament and Westminster. Despite the fact that we've been here for nearly a week, we haven't had much time to do the tourist-y thing, so we were very much excited to be there. The bottom picture shows the London Eye behind the Clock Tower.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUgnflrTUuwppMWxfx2JTDX0ggYAvH10J9sIzRIBoYyH4AWafehbanohMbzZpY4QffwRe-I_JemXDOrnFN8pNElr_PrlomNgc-j1k4XkMyAlCBEF9hizbcp-3Aw3Jgpq9cBf6aLXbDUmw/s1600-h/IMG_0854.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUgnflrTUuwppMWxfx2JTDX0ggYAvH10J9sIzRIBoYyH4AWafehbanohMbzZpY4QffwRe-I_JemXDOrnFN8pNElr_PrlomNgc-j1k4XkMyAlCBEF9hizbcp-3Aw3Jgpq9cBf6aLXbDUmw/s320/IMG_0854.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243783437651114498" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc9jPPQkOwT2WYJD474MdmgNyXiYO4Ydmb8Lp8kIG3fgjkC5aQO4NCyCbQ3h80OxqVrstu8kIYOaT_59M5egvjM2msQKWiNb0iKxAP7IQigURR6gVG7qXHDQiuSYSWp3kzAs4DDXDyLOs/s1600-h/IMG_0872.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc9jPPQkOwT2WYJD474MdmgNyXiYO4Ydmb8Lp8kIG3fgjkC5aQO4NCyCbQ3h80OxqVrstu8kIYOaT_59M5egvjM2msQKWiNb0iKxAP7IQigURR6gVG7qXHDQiuSYSWp3kzAs4DDXDyLOs/s320/IMG_0872.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243783453262092370" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />I don't think we originally planned on going inside Westminster, but we got there and took our pictures and decided that we did want to go inside. Westminster offers an audio guide, so we each took one and spent the next 75 or so minutes walking around the monuments. It was amazing to see the tombs and memorials of Shakespeare, Dickens, Mary Tudor, Elizabeth I, Newton, Darwin, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Chaucer, and Handel, among others. The bottom picture was taken from the cloisters inside the Abbey. The Abbey has a no-picture policy, so I'm entirely sure if I was allowed to take it or not...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK1Kp_507N9QjHalQCaAwDZL0zCNHf5FW6xrb8hdZ5cY0LQczNXqrtoU3873H2hx28p0s8UZMe34Qt3vp1EdOGBTUaFjEK8QE8bsHiY_7jmUfeRQNluOjUmg9UeFkCo6JIqATghrQQEY0/s1600-h/IMG_0870.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK1Kp_507N9QjHalQCaAwDZL0zCNHf5FW6xrb8hdZ5cY0LQczNXqrtoU3873H2hx28p0s8UZMe34Qt3vp1EdOGBTUaFjEK8QE8bsHiY_7jmUfeRQNluOjUmg9UeFkCo6JIqATghrQQEY0/s320/IMG_0870.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243783445567846770" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVnnQRSfoeLkmWz3SHHWttiK95nMvWzTbm9MwERnt9joy2sacov_8DK42pyg3ZvUOeMHJrtB7wUE3V0hk2dF2H4efK4LKdrjBnstxbqmpcFWbVcI9UvwXLLgQDqodnW0uVYjQp0SnhehY/s1600-h/IMG_0864.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVnnQRSfoeLkmWz3SHHWttiK95nMvWzTbm9MwERnt9joy2sacov_8DK42pyg3ZvUOeMHJrtB7wUE3V0hk2dF2H4efK4LKdrjBnstxbqmpcFWbVcI9UvwXLLgQDqodnW0uVYjQp0SnhehY/s320/IMG_0864.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243943733399973250" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />After our trip to the Abbey, we went down to Piccadilly Circus and spoke to some of the box offices at the theatres. Turns out they offer leftover tickets to students at the door on the night of the show, so we came back in the evening to see The Rain Man, featuring Josh Hartnett (<span style="font-style: italic;">Pearl Harbor</span>) in Tom Cruise's original role. Being the recently-teenage girls that we are, we waited outside the stage door behind the theatre for a glimpse of Josh after the show. All by myself, too! I successfully navigated O'Hare, managing to both find my gate and miss seeing Michael Phelps, who was rumored to be walking around the same terminal wing. After landing at Heathrow in London, I sailed through customs, claimed my baggage, and found the ticket office for the Heathrow Express, which would take me downtown. From the giant Paddington Station, I found the taxi line and hailed a cab to take me the rest of the way to the dorm. After unpacking and exploring my tiny room, I decided to explore the greater outdoors, known as Kings Road, where I found food and purchased the required cell phone. Oh, and I also discovered the Thames. It's only a couple of blocks down the road.<br /><br /><img src="file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Stephanie/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/2008_09_03/IMG_0593.JPG" alt="" />The pictures are of my dorm room, but I don't think they fully demonstrate how little space there is in here.
